CNN —A vigil will be held Monday afternoon for Laken Hope Riley, an Augusta University nursing student who was found dead after jogging on the University of Georgia campus last week, as her suspected killer’s immigration status has drawn the scrutiny of Republican leaders. Riley, who was a UGA student until May 2023, was found dead Thursday near a lake on the university’s campus from blunt force trauma, according to UGA Police Chief Jeff Clark. Riley’s killing has left the University of Georgia to grieve two tragic deaths that occurred less than a day apart: Her body was discovered just hours after the death of a UGA student the previous night. The Monday afternoon vigil will be co-hosted by Riley’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority at UGA in remembrance of both of the dead students, the university said. Clark referred to Riley’s killing as a “crime of opportunity,” noting he believes the suspect acted alone.

CNN —The suspect in the killing of an Augusta University College of Nursing student on the University of Georgia campus in Athens did not attend school at the campus and did not know the victim, authorities said Friday. The Athens-Clarke County Coroner identified the 22-year-old nursing student on Friday morning. All classes on the University of Georgia’s Athens campus were canceled Friday and will resume Monday, the school said. CNN —Vince Dooley, who coached the Georgia Bulldogs to the 1980 national championship and won the most football games in school history, has died at the age of 90, the university announced Friday. Dooley died peacefully at his house surrounded by his family Friday afternoon, the school said. While serving as head coach, Dooley also became the school’s athletic director in 1979 and stayed in the role until 2004. Dooley, who was the 1980 national coach of the year, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. “It is impossible to quantify what Coach Dooley has meant to the University of Georgia,” Georgia football said in a tweet.

Among state flagship universities, UGA has one of the country’s largest disparities between its proportion of Black students and that of Black high school graduates from the state — second only to the University of Mississippi. “Black students admitted to UGA — they have a lot of options,” said Alton Standifer, deputy chief of staff to the university president, referring to the competition among colleges to enroll Georgia’s Black students. Still, many Black students in Georgia choose to attend more diverse institutions or opt for a historically Black college or university. A reliance on SAT scores can disadvantage Black students, whose average SAT score in 2019 was 933, more than 180 points below that of white students. Selective public universities like UGA that used the Common App have seen an increase in applicants, including traditionally underrepresented students, such as Black students.
